California's new vaccination law titled Senate Bill 227 went into effect on July 1, 2016.  The new law requires children to be immunized against serious communicable diseases to attend a public or private school and child care centers.

Health officials have been tracking vaccination data trends closely to determine the impact of the controversial legislation, especially in communities with high percentages of unvaccinated students before the date the law into effect.   According to Edsource, data trends include:

  • The number of students whose parents chose to "Opt-out" of immunization requirements for personal, religious and medical reasons.
  • The number of students admitted to school under the condition that the student will become current on vaccinations.
  • The number of students who have met vaccine requirements.
  • The number of students overdue on vaccine requirements.

Edsource provides a Kindergarten Vaccination Database that provides vaccine rates for over 7,000 California elementary schools for the 2015-16 school year.  Public, charter and private elementary schools operated by the Department of Education during  2015-16 are included in the database, except for schools with 10 or fewer students.
