Every person, firm, association, partnership, or corporation located in California that provides full time day school for students that are ages six through eighteen and offer instruction “… in the several branches of study required to be taught in the public schools of the state” are required to file a Private School Affidavit between October 1st and October 15th.

This includes (but is not limited to): conventional/traditional private schools, private school satellite programs, private online/virtual schools, parents who operate a private homeschool, and State certified nonpublic, nonsectarian schools. As many of you are aware, one of the elements of CDE state certification is the annual filing of the Private School Affidavit. This annual filing of the affidavit by nonpublic schools is an element that is part of the written/on-site review for the California Department of Education, Nonpublic Schools Unit.

Although the filing period is officially between October 1st and October 15th, the private school's office will accept an affidavit any time between October 1st and July 1st of the following year.  Also, if any corrections that need to be made to an affidavit already filed, the affidavit website (https://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/annualpsanotice.asp ) requires a password that was sent to renewing NPS on September 21st (see the letter at the previous web link) and must be used to finalize the affidavit after it is filled out. The Private School Affidavit itself is filed at this web address: http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/affidavit.asp .

If you have any questions, please contact the Teacher and Leader Policy Office by phone at 916-445-7331 or by e-mail at privateschools@cde.ca.gov

The data submitted via the PSA is used to create the annual Private School Directory. The reported data and enrollment information is used by a number of State and federal agencies that provide programs and services to children and families in California and for other reporting needs.

A non-profit private school that files the PSA and indicates a total enrollment of six or more students will be reported to the public school district in which it is located as a private school that is eligible for certain services and resources under Title IX, Part E Uniform Provisions  External link opens in new window or tab. (DOC) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act via the Consolidated Application Reporting System.

If you have any other concerns regarding the filing of this Affidavit or need more information, please call the CAPSES Office at (916) 447-7061.
