Event Details

 

The CAPSES Spring Conference is one of our signature events for the year and includes education sessions for Nonpublic School and Agency Administrators, educators and staff.  The CAPSES annual conference will provide information about innovations, strategies, and the governmental issues facing schools and agencies.  Members are encouraged to check with your Title I Administrator for available funding.

This year, CAPSES has expanded the Conference to include Friday, March 13, 2015.   Two sessions of significant interest to school and agency administrators will be presented, followed by a Wine and Cheese Networking event.   The conference continues on Saturday, March 14th with sessions for school and agency administrators, educators and staff.

CAPSES Governmental Affairs Update  Presented by Richard Schnetzer, CAPSES Governmental Affairs Consultant and  Teresa Malekzadeh, CAPSES Governmental Affairs President

An overview of public policy and legislative issues expected to impact California Nonpublic Schools and Nonpublic Agencies in the 2015-16 session of the California Legislature, the California Department of Education, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

In this session, you will hear first hand about the rate negotiation process developed in  the San Diego Region and adopted in Los Angeles by the CAPSES negotiating team.  The  presenters will assist you in establishing your process, and teach you how to overcome obstacles you may encounter along the way.

Common Core State Standards Though the Lens of Students with Disabilities, Kevin Schaefer, Assistant Director of Special Programs CPEI  - WestEd

The expectation that all students are prepared for the 21st Century workforce has increased dramatically with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards,. Administrator knowledge, expertise, and understanding of the CCSS and the implications for students with disabilities is critical. This workshop will address the CCSS shifts, integrated model of literacy, IEP Team priorities, and resources to deepen understanding of the CCSS leading to positive post-secondary outcomes.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an instructional planning framework that honors student learning variability and increases access to Common Core State Standards-aligned curriculum and instruction. The Common Core State Standards and related assessments are based on UDL principles and are, thus, foundational to the implementation and success of the college, career and civic life readiness of all students. Administrators will be able to identify the principles, guidelines and checkpoints of UDL, access UDL resources to support staff in the development of barrier-free instruction and recognize UDL-based strategies and accommodations in the classroom setting.

Appropriate for those seeking to renew their certification or those seeking to become certified for the first time. 

First Aid and CPR is essential in emergency cases.  Knowing what action needs to be taken to control an emergency can make the difference between life and death.  Emergencies occur all around us, in all spheres of life.  Someone may be injured at work, school or home.  When this happens, first aid basics will equip anyone around the injured person to reduce the danger posed by the accident. 

This session begins at 9:45 a.m. and ends at 12:30 a.m.

Applied Behavior Analysis – A Practice and Policy Primer, Joyce Tu, Ed.D., BCBA-D; President, CalABA Board of Directors

2014 saw the introduction of several significant changes that will impact how behavior analysts practice and run their businesses efficiently and effectively in California.  During this presentation, the speaker will discuss a variety of topics including the American Medical Association’s temporary CPT codes for Behavioral Health Treatments, MediCal coverage of Applied Behavior Analysis services, licensure efforts for BCBA’s in California and the long-term impact of these changes for behavior analysts practicing in California.  Following Updates from the speaker there will be time allotted for dialog with members of the audience.

Preventing Harassment, Discrimination and Retaliation in the School Setting, Shardé Thomas, Attorney, Liebert Cassidy Whitmore

This practical workshop, designed for all levels of administration, provides guidance on structuring personnel policies and practices as well as managing day-to-day interactions to prevent unlawful harassment. This session fully meets the requirements of AB 1825 and AB 2053.

Shardé Thomas is an attorney with the law firm Liebert Cassidy Whitmore and provides representation and counsel to both public entities and private schools in all aspect of education, employment and labor law, including litigation and transactional matters. Shardé's practice includes advising clients on employment policies and providing litigation support in a variety of employment-related matters, including issues involving hiring, terminations, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, as well as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA).

AB 114 Three Years (almost) Later - Nancy M. Shea, Senior Attorney, Mental Health Advocacy Services

In June 2011, AB 3632 was supplanted by AB 114, with full implementation taking place in the summer of 2012.  In the two and a half years since then, schools, districts and SELPAs have been struggling with the best way to provide mental health services to the students of California.  Join us at a round table to discuss successes, failures, and innovative programming that have taken place since AB 114.  What have we learned and what is still needed to ensure that the students we work with are receiving the services they need to be successful.
