CAPSES Governmental Affairs Update

Presented by Richard Schnetzer, Governmental Affairs Consultant &

Teresa Malekzadeh, CAPSES Governmental Affairs Chairperson

Session Description

An overview of public policy and legislative issues expected to impact California Nonpublic Schools and Nonpublic Agencies in the 2015-16 session of the California Legislature, the California Department of Education, and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. As the number of students enrolled in teacher preparation programs has plummeted over the past decade – from more than 77,000 in 2001-012 to less than 20,000 in 2012-13, it is expected that this shortage will have serious impact on NPS/A. In February, the Statewide Special Education Task Force is to release its recommendations for overhauling the special education system, and the State Board of Education will continue its focus on accountability in public schools….a discussion of these issues will focus upon NPS/A, the ways that Master Contract provisions may change, and planning that must occur to survive as a private provider of special education services.
